Jerry Seinfeld and Channel Seven have put the call out for Australian couples with a domestic score to settle to feature on their new comedy panel show, The Marriage Ref.

The show, created by Jerry Seinfeld, will showcase couples who want to mount their arguments about issues both big and small in front of a celebrity panel. “It’s just the fun of the arguments, that’s what the show is about. There’s nothing in the show that’s really too heavy or serious,” says Seinfeld.

The program is a lighthearted series looking at the fun and humour of marriage, it is not a judgemental or counseling type program and is keen to work with stable and committed couples. The couples that are selected will be filmed for 1-2 days only and reimbursed for any expenses as well as given a prize. Couples are filmed at home or work depending on their preference.

Over the years I have been to many weddings with a DIY element. Sometimes it is because the bride and groom are trying to cut the expenses down, where other times it is to add a personal element to the mix. From DIY invitations to the entire self catered backyard barbeque on the lawn reception, there is no limit to what you can do yourself if you have the time and skillful people around you.

There is however, a multitude of precautions to take to ensure your DIY wedding doesn’t feel under organised, under catered or overly tacky.

To begin with,  invitations are a very popular DIY product, with scrapbook and craft shops offering a huge range of products to help create that perfect invitation. You can also research ideas and designs on the web. Some websites even provide downloads of artwork for a small fee which you can then modify and personalise to your needs. Printing the invitations yourself can often end up costing more money and time than if you were to have a printer run off some copies with precision cutting to avoid those scrappy edges. Unless you are a bit crafty and confident with graphic software and printing elements you may prefer to consider using a professional. A professional invitation company can provide not only invitations, but matching thankyou cards, accept/decline cards, personalised envelopes and much more.

When researching your venue, be it a garden, local park, reception centre or your own backyard, it is important to think ahead about the type of weather you may encounter on your wedding day. On a hot day, your guests will seek shelter from the sun under anything which provides shade. This may mean they will not be sitting in the desired positions when it comes time for you to walk down the aisle. It is a very good idea to provide bottles of water to your guests during a hot ceremony to avoid heat related illness’ such as heat stroke. Heat stroke is serious and can occur very rapidly in hot conditions. Over the years, I have seen too many people affected by heat stroke during wedding ceremonies, creating embarrassment for those concerned and unwanted anxiety for the bride and groom. If the ceremony is to be held at a local park, check with the local council for permissions or booking requirements. If the location does not have power available, you will need to notify your sound technician so any music or microphones can be run through battery operated equipment. For most parts of Victoria there is no such thing as guaranteed weather, so always have a backup plan in case of rain.

Cars are another popular area to save some dollars. If you have friends or family members who are nice enough to allow their cars to be your mode of transport for the day, there are a few things you need to consider. The driver will need to be drinking responsibly, the cars will need to be detailed, or at least, washed and vacuumed. It is a nice gesture to put some money towards these costs as well as the fuel costs if there is a bit of driving involved. When choosing the driver, ensure that he or she is timely and responsible. Craft shops are a great place to look for a roll of ribbon to place on the front of the car for the traditional bridal car look. Ensure you have enough ribbon to reach from the driver side sun visor, down to the bonnet latch and back up to the visor on the passenger side. Practice putting on the ribbon. You would be surprised how many brides have been late to the ceremony because the drivers have been trying to get the ribbon on the car. If you prefer to relax about the details, be pampered by your chauffeur and have guaranteed reliable, quality service on the day, then a professional car hire service is the best idea.

When it comes to photos and video, you can guess our position. It is always best to hire a professional. You may have friends who are good at photography and you may have family who are willing to run around with a video camera all day, but capturing such a big day puts a lot of pressure and stress on in-experienced friends or family. Professionals who record weddings full time, know what is required, have the equipment and have the experience to capture your day with little interference. After the wedding is over, a professional video production company or photographer can produce a dvd or album which reflects the value you place on your marriage, and the time and energy you have put into organizing your big day. Whether it’s a full day coverage or just the formalities, professional coverage gives you the ability to remember the day and often see things you only heard stories about on the day.
